A Monument, 2022

Mixed media installation. 12'31''

This project looks into the Post-Loyalism identity in Taiwan and is composed of sound and installation. The text is a travel note in an unnamed mountain conveyed by a voice narrator, leading the viewer into a hot summer and seeing a monument with a plum blossom totem that will never be found again. The sound of cicadas is from Tanna sozanensis, which are active from May to July and have a sad and shrill sound. A sequence of simple and blurry images is provided as visual cues to help the viewer imagine the journey. Using a method like 'after-image,' the installation invites the viewer to fill in the visual absence with their imagination. Like the Post-loyalism identity,  the monument is not physical. It exists in the imaginations and beliefs of individuals. When the Post-Loyalism identity is forgotten, it is as if a spirit has faded.
