This project features two stereotypical East Asian female figures in Hollywood, Madama Butterfly, and Dragon Lady. It seeks to address how East Asian women are perceived as the Other in the West.
This installation includes two wooden lanterns wrapped in black cardboard.
Madame Butterfly and the Dragon Lady, two classic stereotypical figures of East Asianwomen, are pictured on two lanterns. Madama Butterfly presents Asian women as frail, submissive, and quiet. The dragon ladyDaughter of the Dragon)is typically portrayed as a ruthless, deadly killer in Hollywood movies. Such images of women are so profoundly rooted in people's minds that they have not changed until now.
The two lanterns can be hung on a wall or carried around by audiences. The images projected by the lanterns' light can be large as well as small, vague, or distinct, according to the distance between the lantern and the surrounding wall.
In this way, the installation expresses orientalism female figures are illusory but exist everywhere.
